Several changes have been occurred on U.S. paper money in recent years. The changes have been implemented during the redesign of denominations of U.S. Federal Reserve notes (with the exception of the $1) beginning with the $100. Several features have been added to protect our money from counterfeiting include:
1. An enlarged portrait placed off-center to accommodate a watermark visible when the note is held up to a light.
2. A polymer security thread embedded vertically in the paper. The location of the thread varies depending on the denomination.
3. Fine line printing patterns behind the back illustration.
4. Microprinting on different areas of the notes.
5. Color-shifting ink that appears black when the front is viewed at an angle.
6. A low-vision feature on the back, lower right corner for easier identification of the denomination.
7. New Federal Reserve indicators including a universal seal and a letter and number below the serial number identifying the issuing Federal Reserve Bank.
8. A unique combination of eleven numbers and letters that appear twice on the front of all notes.

Bullish investors may choose to leverage their position by borrowing money against their existing gold assets and then purchasing more gold on account with the loaned funds. In order to keep the cost of debt to a minimum, these individuals would normally seek a loan in the currency with the lowest borrowing rate, which, as of April 2006, was the Japanese yen. This technique is referred to as a "yen-gold carry trade". Leverage may increase investment gains but increases risk, as, if the gold price decreases, the investor may be subject to a margin call. Leverage is also an integral part of buying gold derivatives and unhedged gold mining company shares.

Frosty luster is considered a plus by most collectors. Unfortunately, this sort of luster is becoming harder to find as more and more gold coins are chemically treated. Although some of these U.S. paper money notes carry more of a premium than others, most $2 and $5 Red Seals that are seen are circulated notes from common series that carry very little premium over face value. All $1 Red Seals are scarce and are quite valuable in higher grades, while $100 Red Seals (although relatively modern) carry a premium of 20% to 40% even in circulated condition. Again, there are several scarce issues among these notes, and we recommend the Standard Guide to Small Size U.S. Paper Money (1928 to date), by Dean Oakes and John Schwartz, for more information.

Does it pass the silver coin ring test? Silver coins have a distinctive ring when held on the tip of a finger and tapped with another coin. Be careful doing this test, though; you don't want to ding or damage the coin, or drop it onto a hard surface, so use some judgement. The ring test can be helpful when all other easy methods of checking are inconclusive. Remember, if something ever feels "wrong" about a silver coin, don't buy it! Trust your instincts! And if you've already bought it, send it back!

There are two interesting subtypes of prooflike coins that the collector should be aware of. The first are coins that are Deep Mirror Prooflike. These are coins with especially reflective surfaces and a look that can be deceptively similar to that of a Proof. As an example, there are certain gold dollars from the 1880's that are extremely hard to tell apart from Proofs. Generally speaking, many of the gold coins that are designated as Deep Mirror Prooflike by NGC command strong premiums, especially for issues that are generally seen with frosty or satiny surfaces.
